While other boys, including his best friend Tomas, were chosen, Pug remained the only person not chosen, until Kulgan stepped in, saying that he had a need for an apprentice.Īs time went by, Pug grew increasingly frustrated by his lack of progress in his magical studies.

Presiding over the events were the ruling noble of Crydee, the Duke Borric, and his children, Lyam, Arutha, and Carline. During their conversation, Pug was handed a crystal ball for scrying, to which he is able to activate and view Castle Crydee, much to Kulgan's surprise.ĭays later, it was the time of the Choosing, where boys of age were to be chosen by various craft-masters as apprentices. He was saved by Meecham, a franklin, who brought him indoors, into the home of the Duke's magician and adviser, Kulgan.

This is fortunate, considering that a sequel, ''Silverthorn,'' is announced at the end.In 1992 a revised edition of the original Magician was published, this re-release contained over 15,000 words of text that was omitted due to editing restraints.Ĭurrently in the United States of America, Magician is released as two separate volumes Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master.ĭuring a storm, a servant-boy, Pug, was caught outdoors and encountered a wild boar. Although formulaic, ''Magician'' does have its engaging moments, such as Pug's sojourn in the invader's world. The Spielberg-Lucas genre of film-making also shows its influences. An underground network of thieves and charming urchins is borrowed straight from Charles Dickens. But come Book II and the outbreak of war, the plot takes some inventive twists that liven up the story considerably. Its 253 pages could have been condensed effectively. This is by far the most mundane section, filled with a repetition of close calls, exhaustion, food and sleep. Book I sends Pug, Tomas and others around the kingdom to inform the various factions of the impending invasion. Tension arises when it is learned that a force from another world intends to invade. Both live within the domain of the Duke of Crydee, a benevolent ruler with two brave sons and a lovely daughter. The cast of characters is typically overwhelming, but Pug, a magician's apprentice, and his best friend Tomas, a swordmaster's apprentice, figure largely throughout. Unfortunately, ''Magician,'' the first volume of this heroic adventure tale, mostly lacks the ingredients of a truly magical book - a dose of originality and wisdom, believable human foibles, and the clash of true evil against honor and goodness. The basic elements of fantasy are simple: maps of the peculiar world in which the tale is set an abundance of dwarfs, elves, dragons and humans with odd names like Kulgan, Arutha, Dolgan and Borric medie val court settings and plenty of trouble brewing plus enough journeys to fill the epic requirement.
